Paragauge
Applications
Proven effective in thousands of home and
professional shops, the PARAGAUGE Parallel Measuring System (PPMS), is the first and only
precision measuring tool ever designed for accurately setting both table and radial arm
saws. In fact it's so precise, that anyone can now cut wood accurate to within 10 one
thousandths of an inch.

Precision
Saw Alignment for the Home and Professional Woodworking Shop
Setting a table
saw rip fence:
To set a perfectly parallel fence,
simply preset the gauge to the required measurement and place the gauge between the blade
and fence. Holding the sliding plate (the one with the two set screws) snugly against the
blade, slide your fence to the back of the gauge and lock your fence in place. After
locking your fence, simply remove the gauge from the table surface and proceed with your
cut.
What Paragauge has allowed you to
do, is lock your fence at a very precise distance (guaranteed accurate to within ten one
thousandths of an inch) which is perfectly parallel to the blade. At the same time,
Paragauge also eliminates one of the most common causes for an incorrectly positioned
fence, that being movement of the fence as its being locked in position. Its a
concept in measuring so simple, its virtually foolproof.
In addition, by using the face of
the blade rather that the table surface for setting purposes, Paragauge has also
eliminated the need to compensate for blade misalignment, thickness of the blade and the
type (kerf) of the blade being used.
Setting the
distance when cutting an inside bevel:
By following the same procedure as
setting up a rip fence, Paragauge will provide a measurement at the lowest point on
the saw blade when setting for an inside bevel. However, since you will only be working
with a very small portion of the blade, care should be taken to make sure that the front
and back of the blade come in contact with the gauge by manually rotating the blade prior
to setting the fence.
Important note: Never check this
measurement by turning on the saw, as serious injury may occur. Also, whenever you have
the possibility of coming in contact with a saw blade, care should be taken to unplug
the saw from the power source to prevent the saw from accidentally turning on.
Setting Depth of
cut:
With a height scale permanently engraved
in the sliding plate, Paragauge provides a means to accurately measure the depth of cut up
to 2.5 inches. To make a measurement, simply place the blade against the scale and record
the measurement at the highest point of the blade. This also applies for accurately
setting radial arm saws for dadoe cutting.
Setting up a
radial arm saw and to check alignment of the saw blade:
As Paragauge can actually double as a
"square", to check for squareness of a radial arm saw, open the gauge to
approximately 6 or 7 inches and place the gauge on the work surface as shown. Place the
base plate against the blade and slide the blade back and forth. If the blade either pulls
away from the plate or binds to it, adjust the saw to bring it into square.
Important note: Never turn on
the saw when Paragauge is located on the work surface as serious injury may occur.
Setting a radial
arm saw for ripping:
Preset the desired measurement and place
the gauge on the saw as shown. Move the saw blade to the opposite side of the gauge and
lock the fence in position. Remove the gauge from the table surface and proceed with your
cut. Note: If you plan on using your Paragauge primarily on a radial arm saw, we recommend
purchasing the 12 inch model (PG-12), as its much easier to move around the table
surface (and around the post) due to its smaller size.
To check for
heel in horizontal position:
One of the most difficult tasks when
setting up a radial arm saw is checking for heel in horizontal position. With Paragauge,
all you need to do is open the gauge to approximately two inches smaller than the diameter
of the blade and place the gauge on the table as shown. Lower the blade to the gauge until
it just comes in contact with the top edge of the gauge. At that point, make the necessary
adjustment to the table surface so that all edges of the blade are evenly
positioned against the top edge of the gauge.
Setting
temporary fences on drill presses and band saws:
Open Paragauge to the desired
measurement, place the gauge on the table surface and slide the gauge to either the drill
bit or band saw blade. To complete the setting process, place your temporary fence at the
back end of the gauge and secure to the table using clamps. Remove the gauge from the work
surface and proceed with your cut. The same procedure also holds true for setting up
router and shaper tables (Paragauge can also be used for accurately setting cutter
height).
